Tree pruning is the selective removal of branches from a tree to achieve a specific goal. That goal might be reducing the risk of failure in a heavy limb, clearing a sight line, removing dead wood, improving light penetration through the canopy, or correcting the structural development of a young tree.
Pruning is not the same as trimming, though the two terms are often used interchangeably. Trimming is generally focused on aesthetics and clearance. Pruning goes deeper, addressing the structure and health of the tree from the inside out.
Trees benefit from regular pruning throughout their life, but certain conditions make pruning more urgent.
Dead or dying branches are a safety hazard. They can fall without warning, and as they decay, they create entry points for disease and insects. Removing dead wood is one of the most immediate benefits of a pruning visit.
Crossing branches rub against each other and create wounds that invite disease. Structural pruning removes the weaker of two crossing branches before the wound becomes a recurring problem.
Canopy density can become an issue for large trees in areas prone to high winds. A dense canopy acts as a sail, and reducing it allows wind to pass through the tree rather than pushing against it.
Clearance pruning addresses branches growing too close to a roof, gutter, power line, or neighboring property.
Young trees benefit from early structural pruning that establishes the branch architecture before the tree grows large enough that correcting bad structure becomes a much bigger job.

We walk the tree before any pruning begins. The goal is to understand what the tree looks like as a whole before deciding what comes off. Good pruning removes the right branches in the right sequence to achieve the goal without over-removing foliage or creating new structural problems.

Every cut is made at the right location. Flush cuts and stub cuts both cause problems. Proper pruning cuts are made just outside the branch collar to allow the tree to seal the wound correctly.

Large limbs are not dropped free. They are rigged and lowered in sections to prevent impact damage to the ground, roots, lawn, or structures below.

All cut material is cleared from the property. We do not leave brush piles or logs behind unless requested.
Pruning by a trained crew reduces risk, improves tree health, and extends the productive life of the tree. It also protects the property below the tree by eliminating branches that are likely to fail.
Over-pruning, topping, and improper cuts cause long-term damage that can require costly correction or result in early tree removal. Professional pruning avoids those outcomes by following established standards for how much foliage can be removed at once and where each cut should be placed.
We are fully insured professionals committed to protecting your property.
Arborist Tree Service provides health assessments & treatment recommendations for trees that may have disease or structural issues beyond what pruning alone can address.
Tree Trimming covers clearance & aesthetic trimming for trees that do not require structural pruning.
Tree Removal is the appropriate step when a tree has declined beyond the point where pruning can restore its safety or health.
Spotswood’s Tree Service takes pruning seriously. Our crew does not top trees, does not remove more foliage than the tree can sustain, and does not make cuts that leave stubs or flush surfaces. We work to a standard that protects the tree while achieving the safety and clearance goals the homeowner needs.
